Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hey Kerry, Late in the second period of the Leafs-Kings game on Sunday, Jake Gardiner played the puck down with a high stick and proceeded to touch the puck again before being stripped of it by Justin Williams who would score on the play. Why was the goal allowed to stand and why wasnt it reviewable? Thanks, Peter Borkowski Peter, Video review can only rule on high-sticking of a puck that goes directly into the net or is deflected off any player into the net. Review cannot be utilized to rule on a puck that has been struck with a high stick and is picked up by a player of the offending team prior to goal being scored. Following Jake Gardiners high stick of the puck it became a judgment call for the referee to determine if Gardiners subsequent stick contact with the puck constituted possession and control versus a deflection. Rule 80.1 informs us when a puck is struck with a high stick and subsequently comes into possession and control of a player from the offending team (including the player who made contact with the puck), either directly or deflected off any player or official, there shall be a whistle. On this play the referee must have deemed the actions and contact of the puck by Gardiner insufficient to constitute full possession and control and allowed the play to continue. Justin Williams was the next player to touch the puck and tipped it past James Reimer into the net for what was deemed a legal goal. Let me explain why the whistle should have been blown by the referee prior to the puck entering the net. When a delayed penalty or high stick of the puck infraction takes place the offending player or team is typically judged to have acquired possession and control of the puck if he makes a deliberate play on the puck, thereby making contact and/or advances the puck in an intended direction as opposed to a simple deflection. Cheap Air Max 97 Green. After Gardiner struck the puck above his head he turned in an effort to beat Justin Williams to the loose puck. The Toronto player then made a distinct play with his stick to clear the puck in a backward direction and away from Williams. Gardiner was able to contact the puck just prior to an active stick being implemented by Williams. After Gardiner advanced the puck it deflected up the extended shaft of Williams stick, struck last seasons Conn Smythe Trophy winner in the shoulder and then rebounded toward the net. The deliberate action by Gardiner constituted possession and control and the deflections off the stick and body of Williams do not. It was however an extremely close play from the instant Gardiner contacted the puck and it slid up the shaft of Williams. It was therefore reasonable for the referee to interpret that the two sticks contacted the puck simultaneously and that full possession and control had yet been gained by either player. My rule of thumb on close touch plays Peter is if the defending player advances the puck more in his intended direction (which was usually toward the blue line or away from an attacking player) it usually meant the defending player made the initial contact of the puck. If the puck was advance in the intended direction of the attacking player I provided him with any benefit of the doubt. Should the puck pop straight up in the air it is reasonable to assume that both sticks made contact at about the same instant resulting in a tie too close to call? The last player to have touched the puck is deemed in possession.
