Smith was charged with assault last August after he and teammate Dwight Anderson allegedly beat a man outside of a Regina nightclub. A judge ordered Smith to stand trial after a preliminary hearing in June found that there was enough evidence to try him but not Anderson. Roughriders head coach Corey Chamblin said he doesnt want any distractions and the team will deal with the situation when they get back to Regina. Ryan Smith or Chaz Schilens could line up in Smiths spot for Thursdays game, or Chris Getzlaf could move around, according to Chamblin. Starting guard Brendon LaBatte, who left Saturdays game early in the first quarter with an apparent ankle injury and did not return, took every rep in practice on Tuesday and according to Chamblin, is expected to play on Thursday. Chamblin said the injury wasnt serious and that LaBatte could have returned to the game if needed but with the Riders in control, it was decided to let LaBatte rest.
